How to remove a Sliding Patio Door?

Getting your patio ready for summer? Whether you’re moving large furniture, prepping for a project, or just need more open space, sometimes removing your sliding patio door is the easiest way to get the job done.

At HomeRite, we make home improvement easier—starting with understanding how things work. In this short guide (and video below), Jared, our Project Manager, walks you through how to remove a standard sliding patio door safely and efficiently.

Here are the 3 main steps:

  1. Remove the interior trim
Start by carefully prying off the interior trim with a flat bar or putty knife. This will give you access to the door frame and stationary panel.
  2. Take out the stationary panel
Look for screws or brackets holding the stationary panel in place—usually along the top and bottom tracks. Once removed, lift the panel out of the frame and set it aside gently.
  3. Remove the sliding panel
Open the sliding panel halfway, then lift it up into the top track and tilt the bottom out. With a bit of careful maneuvering, it should lift right off.

Safety Tip: Always use caution. Wear gloves and have a second person nearby—sliding doors are heavier than they look and can crack or shatter if handled roughly.

Need help reinstalling it afterward—or thinking about upgrading to a more efficient patio door? We’re here to help.
